Weston-super-Mare AFC - Match Reports
Match reports - Season 2007 - 2008
Weston 0 - 2 Bath City
29/12/2007 -Blue Square South - 3:00pm
Sunny
After their battling display against Newport County on Boxing Day the Seagulls turned in a below par performance against their local rivals and allowed the Romans to complete a league double, having already won the first game back in August.
This was not a performance of merit from Weston, outgunned, outfought, out muscled, they conceded the midfield without a fight and up front showed nothing to suggest that they could remotely trouble a well organised defence that contained the shot shy Weston strike force without breaking sweat.
Bath started with three Ex-Seagull favourites in their line-up, David Gilroy up front, Lewis Hogg in midfield and Chris Holland at the heart of the defence, and included two more on the subs bench, Sekani Simpson and Scott Rogers. All played some part in the victory. Hogg scoring the second goal just three minutes from time.
Weston started with a recall for Marc McGregor, taking his place at the front of the line in place of the out of form Gareth Hopkins and it was McGregor who created the first chance of the game when his flick on allowed Aaron Ledgister a shot at goal, but his effort was very weak and was easily saved by Paul Evans. Bath's first effort was also wasted as Steve Jones blasted high and wide from a good position. Gilroy should also have done better when he was through on goal but another feeble effort did not trouble Ryan Northmore in the Weston goal.
When Weston were awarded a free kick Andy Gurney took the kick quickly but his cross was just too far in front of McGregor and the ball was cleared.
Bath's Gethin Jones went on a tremendous run down the right flank but his cross into the area eluded everyone, then Gilroy blasted a shot which cannoned off the legs of Curtis Ujah and away for a corner, from which Adie Harris shot wide.
On the stroke of half time Weston should have taken the lead when Ledgister got round his marker, ran to the by-line and put over a cross which was not properly cleared, the ball fell to McGregor who appeared a little off balance and he could only plant his header over the bar from just six yards out.
The visitors piled on the pressure in the second half and it was no surprise when they took the lead on fifty one minutes when a defensive lapse allowed the ball to fall to Darren Edward's just three yards out, he made no mistake in beating Northmore to open the scoring.
Throughout the half Weston huffed and puffed but could not find a way through the Bath rearguard. their only real chance of the half came from a free kick which Ledgister curled just a couple of feet wide, that was about the sum of their efforts. Three substitutions made little difference and it was no surprise when the visitors sealed the game on 87 minutes. Again the Weston defence allowed too much space in their six yard box and when substitute Scott Partridge put over a deep cross there was Hogg, completely unmarked, to rise majestically and plant a firm header into the top corner.
Weston now face three away games before they play again at home, if they do not start to pick up points on a regular basis they may well find themselves dragged into a relegation dogfight, and after last season that is something they could well do without. Half Time: 0 - 0 Attendance: 702
