Thurrock 3 - 2 Weston-super-Mare

05/01/2008 -Blue Square South - 3:00pm

Sun & Clouds

Weston's dismal form continued with this latest defeat at the hands of Thurrock at Ship Lane on Saturday. Despite taking the lead the Seagulls were pegged back by a very dubious penalty decision given by Referee John Megan to the astonishment of most everybody in the ground. From that moment on the game swung away from Weston and they struggled to put together any sort of rhythm.

Weston included new signing Jonathan Beswetherick, on loan from Salisbury City, in the starting line-up, his registration was completed just six minutes before the deadline on Friday. Dean Grubb was recalled to the starting eleven with on loan Sosthehe Yao dropped to the bench alongside barry McConnell, Harry Sherwood, Craig Loxton and recent new signing Mike Whittington.

The first shot on target came from the Seagulls when Andy Gurney attempted a free kick from 35 yards out but keeper David Blackmore held the effort, the first effort from the home side came from Darryl Plummer whose low drive was held at his near post by Weston keeper Ryan Northmore. Beswetherick then swung over a free kick which was met by Curtis Ujah but his header was too high. Weston then forced four successive corners in a spell of prolonged pressure but they could not find a way through some desperate home defending.

However, just before the half hour mark they did manage to take the lead when a quick throw in saw Marc McGregor flick the ball on to Gareth Hopkins, he neatly looped the ball over the head of Blackmore and Lewis Powell was on hand to head the ball into the empty net.

The lead only lasted six minutes, much to everybody's amazement a quite innocuous challenge which saw the ball drift away for a corner was turned into a penalty by one of the Referee's Assistants, and despite heated appeals the Referee pointed to the spot and Greg Lincoln stepped up to smash home the spot kick. From that moment on the home side took the upper hand, piled on the pressure and took the game to Weston who managed to hold out until half time.

Within three minutes of the restart Weston fell behind. A needless free kick, given away by McGregor, was awarded right on the eighteen yard line. Lincoln made no mistake with a neat chip over the wall and past an unsighted Northmore.

WEston tried to get back into the game but their efforts were mainly long range and easily blocked by the home defence who broke away just after the hour mark to increase their lead. A break down the left ended with the ball into the area not being cleared and when it fell to the quaintly named Bai Mas Lettejallow, he gleefully sidefooted home.

Weston pulled a goal back within four minutes when a strong run down the right from Grubb ended with the ball deflecting off a defender and away for a corner. The resultant kick was not cleared and McGregor pounced on the loose ball to hammer it past Blackmore. The Seagulls then went for broke as they tried desperately to level the scores. Gurney saw his attempt cause Blackmore to go full stretch to palm away, McGregor blasted over the bar and substitute Whittington was just wide with his low drive. Thurrock held out and Weston were left to rue their chances.

Their next home game is on Saturday Jan 12th when Hayes & Yeading United come calling. KIck Off is at 3.00pm and the Seagulls will be looking to end their home nightmare which has seen them fail to win a league game at Woodspring Stadium since the middle of September.
