Weston-super-Mare AFC - Match Reports
Match reports - Season 2007 - 2008
Weston 3 - 1 Hayes & Yeading United
12/01/2008 -Blue Square South - 3:00pm
Rain
Weston recorded their first home league victory since September with this win over a very plucky Hayes & Yeading side. The visitors were more than a match for the Seagulls and if they had converted the chances they created they would have been out of sight within the first half hour.
After the horrendous weather on Friday it was much to everyone's surprise that the pitch had survived the downpours and was in fact in excellent condition. Credit must go to groundsman Bob Flaskett for the superb condition.
The visitors went at Weston from the off and in the first minute Ram Marwa sidefooted wide from a good pass from Staforde Palmer. Skipper Andy Gurney then miscontrolled the ball, this allowed Liam Collins to burst through only to be thwarted by a last ditch tackle from Andy Robertson. Keeper Ryan Northmore then showed his true class as he flew to his right to palm away a half volley from Will Hendry which drew applause from all around the ground. James Mulley then caused problems down the right flank and again Robertson was the saviour, sliding in to concede a corner. From the resultant kick Curtis Ujah was on hand to head clear off the line. Palmer then had another chance to open the scoring but he fired wide.
Weston's only response to this initial onslaught was to see Dean Grubb burst through the defence, only to be flagged offside. At the other end the visitors continued to threaten with every attack and a scorching drive from a poor clearance, saw skipper Nevin Saroya, hold his head as the ball thudded against the post and bounced to safety.
On the half hour mark, much against the run of play, the Seagulls took the lead with a well worked goal. Jonathan Beswetherick found Gareth Hopkins, he in turn laid the ball off to Grubb who cut inside and played the ball to Mike Green who, although appearing to lose balance, managed to regain his composure and plant a low left foot drive past keeper Delroy Preddie and into the bottom corner.
Hopkins was then involved in the second goal when he put Lewis Powell through, his effort was deflected for a corner and when the ball was swung over Craig Loxton out jumped everybody in the crowded area to head home over the head of the stranded Preddie.
Grubb then had a chance to increase the lead further but he over ran the ball and Preddie was able to gather.
The second half saw Weston go three up in the 55th minute. Grubb made a superb run down the right, his vicious cross into the area was unfortunately headed past his own keeper by Peter Collins, much to the delight of the home fans.
Despite this comforting lead the home side never looked quite as confident as they should have been, the visitors kept probing the back four and they were rewarded with what should be considered to be a sloppy goal. Substitute Josh Scott picked up the ball just inside his own half, he was allowed to run at the home defence, weaving in and out of some lacklustre tackling, and when he reached the edge of the area he let fly with a drive that beat Northmore.
Weston should have increased their lead but Preddie denied Hopkins when he dived low to palm away his header from a corner. As the game edged towards the final whistle both Marwa and Steve Perkins saw their efforts comfortably saved by Northmore. Weston are at home again on Saturday when they entertain second in the table Eastbourne Borough, this will be a stern test for the home side as Eastbourne have only lost once this season and have conceded just 17 goals in 22 games. The game kicks off at 3.00pm
