Weston 0 - 3 Welling United

09/02/2008 -Blue Square South - 3:00pm

Sunny

Weston suffered a comprehensive defeat at the hands of fellow strugglers Welling United at the Woodspring Stadium on Saturday. The "Wings" recently replaced Manager Neil Smith with Andy Ford and during the past week four new players had been drafted in. Those players, who had never played together before, knitted together perfectly, add to this that full back Joe Howe was making only his second appearance for the club and you can begin to see just what an outstanding performance this was.

Weston were still missing Andy Gurney, serving the last of a two-match suspension, replaced Lewis Powell with Marc McGregor, and had new signing Mickey Bell on the substitutes bench, but were a shadow of the team who had battled so well against Fisher Athletic on Monday evening.

Weston had the first chance of the game when Gareth Hopkins did well to release Craig Loxton but his effort was saved at full stretch by keeper Jamie Turner. Barry McConnell then tried to put Dean Grubb through but the final ball was just too far in front of the speedy winger.

Home keeper Ryan Northmore was called into action when he had to dive to his left to palm away an effort from Ellis Green, from the resulting corner "man of the match" Chris Moore headed over. New signing Amos Foyewa then tested Northmore with a long range drive which the keeper collected easily.

The deadlock was broken on 22 minutes in unfortunate circumstances, a shot from Ohran Stewart appeared to be going wide until it took a wicked deflection off Loxton wrong footing Northmore and putting the visitors one-up.

Welling took heart from this and continued to press forward, their speed of attack often caught the static Weston defence out and the lead was soon doubled on 36 minutes. Weston won a corner, but the ball drifted aimlessly over the heads of all the players in the box, picking up the loose ball Welling charged down the left and a pin point 50 yard cross field ball found Sam Gargan in acres of space, he had time to bring the ball under control and smash a drive out of the reach of Northmore. This left Weston with a mountain to climb but they should have reduced the arrears just before the interval when Loxton found himself in space just inside the area but he ballooned his effort high and wide.

The second half saw the visitors continue to dominate and Stewart should have done better than to shoot wide when well placed, Foyewa shot straight at Northmore, and Robbie Ryan was unlucky to see his thundering drive crash against the post and rebound to safety. The best efforts that Weston could muster during this spell was an effort from Loxton, which he headed over, and a speculative overhead kick from Curtis Ujah which troubled no one.

The visitors sealed the game on 82 minutes when substitute Orlando Smith ws allowed to run at the home defence, in his own time he picked his spot to hit a rising drive into the roof of the net. Although making three substitutions during the second half Weston failed to make any impression on the game and were a well beaten side well before the final whistle.

The Seagulls now face two tricky away games, at newly promoted Bromley on Saturday, and at Bishop's Stortford the following week. These games will be a severe test and if Weston are to maintain a healthy gap between themselves and the relegation pack they will have to start putting in much more commanding performances than this one. They badly need a striker and a creative midfield player if they are to ensure that they are not dragged into another relegation battle
