Weston-super-Mare AFC - Match Reports

Match reports - Season 2007 - 2008

Weston 2 - 2 Hampton & Richmond

08/03/2008 -Blue Square South - 3:00pm

Rain

A superb second half fightback by the Seagulls saw them grab a vital point in their quest to climb away from the relegation zone, scoring in the very last minute to complete a remarkable turnaround.

Starting the game with three central defenders, Curtis Ujah suspended, Charlie Comyn-Platt and Craig Rand both injured, all missing Manager Tony Ricketts gave centre forward Gareth Hopkins the task of filling in at centre half and he turned in a commanding performance. His height and muscle giving some much needed spice to a weakened back four. On loan Ian Herring made his home debut and he also played his part in this much improved Weston performance.

Weston looked very shaky at the start of the game and almost gifted the visitors two chances to open the scoring. Lawrence Yaku should have opened the scoring for the visitors on 9 minutes when a defensive slip allowed the striker a free header on goal but he wasted the chance by heading over. Minutes later he was put through following a mix up from Hopkins, but again he wasted the chance by firing wide.

Ryan Northmore in the home goal, almost gave the home supporters heart failure on 20 minutes when he completely misjudged a pass back from Michael Green, but as he turned and watched nervously the ball rolled just wide of the post.

Herring then had a terrific 30 drive which almost deceived keeper Matt Lovett, readjusting his feet the stopper managed to catch the ball above his head.

On 22 minutes the visitors took the lead when Weston failed to clear their lines following a throw in. Yaku found himself with time and space in the six-yard box. He made no mistake by turning and firing under Northmore with ease.

Right on the stroke of half time the writing appeared to be on the wall for Weston following another defensive blunder. Skipper Andrew Robertson completely missed his attempted headed clearance and this freed up Stuart Lake to take the ball on and coolly beat Northmore from 12 yards.

Whatever was said at half time certainly worked, Weston came out for the second half with renewed enthusiasm and they were rewarded just 4 minutes in, this time a little slice of luck went their way. A short corner from Ben Willshire was played to Wilfried Domoraud, he made ground before firing in a cross towards the far post, to the amazement of everybody in the 6 yard area the ball was allowed to continue in flight it crept in at the far post.

Weston then went all out in their search for the equaliser, playing some of their best football for weeks but time and again though their final ball let them down. Lewis Powell saw his attempt at an acrobatic overhead kick sail wide and Herring was unable to control a through ball from Aaron Wilson. A neat move involving Dean Grubb, Elvis Ewruje and Grubb again freed up Powell but he shot straight at the keeper, Domoraud then saw his effort saved. In between this action Northmore twice came to Weston's rescue by saving with his feet from Yaku and Elliott Godfrey. Then came that dramatic final minute, Wilson played an inch perfect past into the path of Lewis Powell. Although Powell looked suspiciously offside he did not hesitate and rounding keeper Matt Lovett he slipped the ball into the empty net.

This was a deserved point for the Seagulls and hopefully will give them heart as they now prepare for 3 tough away games at Havant & Waterlooville, Welling United and Bognor Regis before coming back to the Woodspring to face Dorchester Town on Easter Monday. Three of these games are against sides that are either just below or just above them in the League. These four games could very well determine their season. Att 274
