Weston-super-Mare AFC - Match Reports
Match reports - Season 2007 - 2008
Weston-super-Mare 1 - 0 Dorchester Town
24/03/2008 -Blue Square South - 3:00pm
Sunny
Weston recorded their first victory since January 12th with this Easter Monday victory over fellow strugglers Dorchester Town at the Woodspring Stadium. Perhaps luck played a part in this win but nevertheless the three points came as a welcome relief to the Seagulls and keeps them just a point above the relegation places.
Both sides looked nervous and football came a poor second to desperate defending as no team wanted to lose this game. Weston weathered tremendous pressure during the first quarter of the game but gradually came back and with more controlled finishing in front of goal could have made the game safe long before Referee Lee Swabey finally brought relief to the home fans by blowing for full time.
Again Weston were without the three main central defenders but one piece of good news for the faithful was the inclusion of Charlie Comyn-Platt on the subs bench. Mickey Bell was restored to defence at the expense of Ben Willshire, and in came Barry McConnell to play a pivotal role in then heart of the defence. But once again the versatile Gareth Hopkins showed everyone that when the chips are down he can put in a Man of the Match performance in his unaccustomed role at centre half.
Hopkins was called upon early to make a last gasp saving tackle on James Rowe as the striker made ground into the area and then keeper Ryan Northmore came to Weston's rescue as he made a point blank save from an effort from Nick Eastham following a cross from the right.
Marc McGregor fed Ian Herring but he shot wide and then McGregor tried his luck with a free kick but the ball was straight at keeper "Chico" Ramos.
Wilfried Domoraud then combined with Lewis Powell but the return ball was just too far in front of the French striker and the chance was gone.
Hopkins was instrumental in setting up the only goal of the game on 36 minutes when ha made a great tackle to win the ball, Herring picked up the loose ball and put through Powell, the diminutive striker drew Ramos before drilling a low drive into the far corner.
Weston almost doubled their lead just before the break when a free kick from Bell was flicked on by Holgate, the ball reached Herring who tried a spectacular overhead kick only to see the effort just clear the crossbar.
The second half was mainly one of high balls pumped up by both sides, desperate defending and a succession of sliced clearances, mainly by Weston, as desperation took over. The only chances of note saw the visitors substitute Jon Docker curl a free kick just wide, Jones Awuah see his effort blocked and Docker again who headed over following a free kick. Weston could have made the game safe when Domoraud rounded the keeper but somehow shot side, then saw his effort fumbled by Ramos and when Powell went in for the rebound he was adjudged to have fouled the keeper. And Weston sub Dean Grubb was put through but his effort was blocked by the keepers outstretched hand and McGregor, following up blazed over.
This win was a welcome relief for the Seagulls, although they have games in hand over all their rivals they must start to win these games to have any chance of staying up. The games come thick and fast now and they start the run in with a trip to table toppers Eastbourne Borough on Saturday. Any sort of result there would be considered a huge bonus at this point in the season. Att: 273
