Weston-super-Mare AFC - Match Reports
Match reports - Season 2007 - 2008
Eastbourne 2 v 2 Weston
29/03/2008 -Blue Square South - 3:00pm
Sunny
Weston came away from the South Coast with a thoroughly well deserved point after an eventful game which saw 9 yellow cards, 2 red cards and the hone team, top of the league on Saturday morning, having to use up all 3 substitutions before half time.
This was by far Weston's best performance in a long time, coming up against the leagues best team they refused to buckle, shook their hosts by taking the lead, and then defending stoutly before snatching a last gasp equaliser from the boot of on loan striker Wilfried Domoraud.
The Seagulls welcomed back Curtis Ujah having served a 4 match suspension, and also welcomed in goalkeeper Kevin sawyer who was covering for the suspended Ryan Northmore. Sawyer produced a Man of the Match performance to deny the hosts with a string of world class saves as the pressure mounted.
Weston were first to threaten when Domoraud saw his shot blocked by an outstretched leg and then on 5 minutes Eastbourne had to make the first of their three forced substitutions when leading scorer Scott Ramsay had to leave the field. They suffered another setback 10 minutes later when Marc Pullan also had to be replaced. Weston took advantage of this by taking the lead on 18 minutes, a long punt upfield was chased down by Domoraud, then rounding his marker he coolly slotted home from the edge of the area.
Eastbourne then started to throw everything at Weston but the defence stood firm, at the other end after Domoraud saw his shot palmed away, Lewis Powell, backing up should have done better than to blast his effort high and wide. Ashan Holgate, later to be taken to hospital, turned his man before firing over.
Just before the interval came the first two point blank saves from sawyer which allowed Weston to go into the break still ahead. Firstly he magnificently saved from Pat Harding and then somehow managed to palm the follow up over the bar from just 5 yards. From the resulting corner he again denied Ben Austin by acrobatically leaping to his left to fist away.
Eastbourne came out for the second half with all guns blazing and it was a backs to the wall jobby for the Seagulls defence. Eastbourne hit the post from a corner, and after sawyer had once again denied the home attack by palming away a fierce free kick, the corner that followed saw Andy Atkin's firm shot cannon off the crossbar and away to safety.
It was odds on that Weston would crack sooner or later and after losing Holgate, who collapsed on the pitch, lost consciousness, and was stretchered off on 67 minutes to be replaced by Craig Rand, the hosts equalised. Paul Armstrong took advantage of some poor defending to finally beat Sawyer by slipping the ball home from inside the area. Urged on by the large crowd the hosts pinned Weston back into their half and it was in surprise when they took the lead with just 10 minutes remaining. A corner on the right was not properly dealt with and Pat Harding somehow managed to squeeze the ball through a crowd of players and into the bottom corner.
The drama was far from over as back came Weston with full force and with just four minutes left the first of the sending off's occurred. Armstrong receiving a second yellow card. As the game moved deep into stoppage tine the Seagulls refused to give up hope and they were rewarded when Domoraud, who had caused the home defence problems all afternoon deservedly got a second goal when he poked the ball home from close range.
Still there was more to come and after a melee in the Weston area Atkin received a straight red card for an elbow on Ian Herring before referee Geoff Jerden called a halt to proceedings. Weston can feel mighty pleased with this performance, showing guts and determination that will be needed over the next 4 weeks as they continue to attempt to pull away from the relegation area.
