Match reports - Season 2007 - 2008

Weston 3 v 3 Basingstoke

21/04/2008 -Blue Square South - 7:45pm

Sun & Clouds

Weston's final home game of the season did not bring the desired result and their tenure of the Blue Square South now seems to be all but over after four seasons. It hardly seems possible that results will go their way on Tuesday evening so they make the long trip to newly crowned champions Lewes on Saturday knowing that their only hope of survival could well rest on decisions made off the field of play.

Weston went into the game knowing that only a win would be suffice to keep the dream of survival alive but they were dealt a blow before kick off with the news that Curtis Ujah and Wilfried Domoraud had both failed fitness tests, and with skipper Andrew Robertson still suffering from a thigh strain and influential midfielder Ian Herring recalled by Salisbury City late on Sunday evening, manager Tony Ricketts was unable to name a full strength substitutes bench.

Weston began the game in determined fashion and in their efforts to score the all important opening goal were caught offside on numerous occasion in the first quarter. Lewis Powell had the first effort but his shot was blocked and keeper Nick Jones was able to save with ease. Keeper Ryan Northmore came to Weston's rescue on 15 minutes when he saved with his feet from david Tarpey when the striker was clean through on goal.

The first goal came on 18 minutes and it seemed to settle Weston down. Awarded a free kick out on the left, when the ball came over the Basingstoke defence failed to clear the ball and Charlie Comyn-Platt was on hand to drill home a low left foot drive. Weston almost doubled their lead a couple of minutes later when a cross from Ben Willshire caused panic in the visitors defence, Mark McGregor got the faintest of touches to the ball but not enough to best Jones. McGregor was also on hand on the half hour when Jones fumbled a shot but again he was unable to get any power behind the shot and Jones saved once again.

Out of the blue the visitors equalised on 34 minutes when a harmless long ball found it's way to Michael Charles, he was allowed to drift in from the left and he shot across Northmore into the far corner.

Not to be outdone Weston pressed forward and regained the lead on the stroke of half time, Ashan Holgate fed Michael Green out on the left and his perfect cross was headed home by McGregor to the delight of the home fans.

The second half could not have started better for the Seagulls as on 50 minutes they increased their lead. A glorious ball down the left from Comyn-Platt found Powell, he made ground down the flank before putting over an inch perfect cross which found the head of McGregor who planted a firm header into the bottom corner. This turned out to be McGregor last meaningful contribution as he had to go off injured just 9 minutes later.

At this point the game looked safe but as in previous games Weston were undone by quick counter attacks, Charles fed James Taylor and his low drive beat Northmore from the edge of the box. Four minutes later and the scores were level when Northmore could only parry a fierce drive from Ben Wells, the ball fell kindly into the path of Taylor and he beat Northmore with ease.

Weston huffed and puffed in their efforts to regain the lead but were once again let down by some woeful finishing, as the game drew to a close Holgate could only stub the ball when just 5 yards from goal and Powell blasted a free kick into the wall.
