Match reports - Season 2007 - 2008

Lewes 3 - 0 Weston-super-Mare

26/04/2008 -Blue Square South - 3:00pm

Sunny

Weston's season finished on another low at champions Lewes on Saturday, recording another defeat the Seagulls also had 2 men dismissed along with 2 from Lewes which included their stand in manager, Ex Seagull Justin Skinner.

Weston were caught up in an aggravated atmosphere at the Dripping Pan as news had broken that successful manager Steve King had been relieved of his duties, a fact that was not too well received by the home fans. The home players, still smarting from a 6-0 thrashing in midweek were in no mood suffer two defeats in a row and went at Weston from the off, and the depleted Seagulls squad, minus 9 first team regulars were hard pressed to hold their hosts at bay.

Ironically Weston had the first chance of the game when Lewis Powell raced after a through ball but a defender managed to knock the ball against the Weston striker's leg and the ball drifted wide for a goal kick.

The home side were awarded a free kick in the 8th minute and Jamie Cade saw his drive cleared off the line by Harry Sherwood, the ever dangerous Jean Michel-Sigere combined to set up Andrew Drury but he hooked the ball over. gareth Hopkins then made a terrible hash of an attempted clearance which let in Sigere but he dragged his effort wide.

The deadlock was broken in the 21st minute and again it stemmed from a Hopkins mistake, he failed to clear the ball and when cade picked up the loose ball he drilled a shot into the crowded goalmouth, the ball fell to Sigere who turned his marker and beat replacement keeper Stuart Jones with a low drive.

The home side doubled their lead on 27 minutes when another dreadful clearance from skipper Charlie Comyn-Platt resulted in a corner. The ball was floated over and home captain Steve Robinson rose unchallenged to head home from 6 yards. The skipper then proceeded to take off his shirt to reveal a hand printed t shirt with the words "The King is dead, Long Live the King", he was promptly booked for his actions.

Weston's only other chance of the half came when Mark McKeever made a run down the left and his cross was headed just wide by Powell.

The second half began with the home side almost increasing their lead on 48 minutes when a dubious free kick was awarded to Lewes, taken quickly it set Sigere through on goal but Jones came to the rescue by saving with his legs. Paul Kennett then let fly from 25 yards with an effort that sailed just over the bar and Weston replied with a curling effort from Sherwood which narrowly missed the angle of post and bar.

The home side responded immediately when Kennett made a dash into the area, his low cross was delicately clipped over the head of Jones by Ian Simpemba.

Powell then sent a free kick just wide before the game erupted in the 66th minute. A rash challenge by jason Burt on Robinson saw the 2 square up to each other before being pulled apart by team-mates, other players and management became involved and it took a few moments before the heat died down. Referee Ian Crouch showed Robinson his second yellow card and Burt received a straight red. Skinner was also dismissed at this point although he remained just behind the dugout for the remainder of the game. Weston made three substitutions, bringing on youngsters Mark Armstrong, David Thorne and Samuel Clark in place of Michael Green, Sherwood and debutant Kevin Davies but it was too late to rescue anything from the game. As the minutes ticked down McKeever drove a free kick wide and Hopkins, by this time restored back to the forward line, saw his effort strike the base of the post and rebound to safety. With the game almost in stoppage time Powell was shown a second yellow by Referee Crouch for stupidly kicking the ball away, a needless booking which just about summed up Weston's season. Weston now have to wait to find out which league they will be playing in next season, there is still a chance that the Seagulls will earn another reprieve if Cambridge City are relegated due to them failing to meet ground grading requirements by the stipulated date of March 31st. Should this be the case then the Weston faithful will be watching Blue Square South football again next season. A final decision on this should be known within the next month.
