Match reports - Season 2007 - 2008

Maidenhead 0 v 0 Weston-s-Mare AFC

08/01/2008 -Blue Square South - 7:30pm

Cloudy

Weston managed to pick up a point on Tuesday evening after this goalless draw, interrupted by a floodlight failure midway through the second half. Quite frankly this was probably the highlight of the evening so to speak as two very ordinary teams struggled to outwit each other, both relying on long balls most of which ran down the slope and out of play, and both sides missing gilt edged chances to steal the three points.

Weston started the game with Gareth Hopkins dropped to the subs bench, and central defender Curtis Ujah unavailable. Manager Tony Ricketts restoring Marc McGregor to a striking position, playing alongside Lewis Powell.

Weston were first to threaten on 4 minutes when Craig Loxton set up Lewis Powell but he shot high and wide. Maidenhead's first opportunity saw the tricky Manny Williams brilliantly control a through ball, turn and shoot low to Northmore's right hand post, happily for the Seagulls the keeper managed to get a hand to the ball and skipper Andy Gurney was on hand to hook the ball clear. Dean Grubb, making a run down the right saw his cross into the box not cleared and when the ball fell to McGregor he wasted the chance by shooting wide.

Carl dennis-Wilson then went close for the hosts with a quick turn and shot which Northmore was happy to see clear the bar. Gurney was on hand again to clear off the line after a smart run from Darti Brown, and then Northmore found himself outjumped by James Hamsher but his header sailed over the bar.

Weston began the second half with Loxton and Powell both seeing their efforts saved before the miss of the match occurred on the hour mark. Neat control and footwork saw Powell slip his marker, round keeper Chico Ramos, and stare at an open goal. Unfortunately for the youngster, just as he was about to shoot into the unguarded net the ball took a wicked bobble, and rolled agonisingly wide of the post.

With time slipping by came the floodlight failure, both teams were escorted off the pitch by the Referee as anxious officials tried to solve the problem, thankfully, after a 20 minute hold up, light was restored and the match was able to continue. No further chances were created by either team and so Weston go into Saturday's home game against Hayes & Yeading United having picked up just 3 points from their last nine league games. A change in fortune must happen quickly in order to prevent the Seagulls being dragged into the relegation spots.

Attendance: 215
