Weston-super-Mare AFC - Match Reports
Match reports - Season 2007 - 2008
Weston 1 v 2 Lewes
17/11/2007 -Blue Square South - 3:00pm
Sunny
In a highly entertaining game at the Woodspring Stadium, second placed Lewes came from behind to snatch all three points and keep up the pressure on the leaders.
Weston, still to record a victory over their visitors, went into the game minus the suspended Ashan Holgate, Lewis Powell continuing to hold his place in the starting line-up.
The first chance of the game fell to the visitors when Weston failed to clear a corner, the ball fell to Paul Booth but from the edge of the box, he shot over the bar.
Weston's first real effort came from Simon Heal who, from a free kick, which was not properly cleared, volleyed wide.
The visitors thought they had taken the lead in the 14th minute when from another free kick out on the left, Leon Legge outjumped the defence to send a powerful header downwards towards the far corner, Weston keeper Ryan Northmore somehow managed to palm the ball against the post and then proceeded to catch the rebound. Despite heated appeals that the ball had crossed the line Referee Paul Forrester waved play on.
Lewes suffered a blow just minutes later when after suffering a knock in a tangle with Heal, Simon Wormull had to leave the field with an ankle injury, Tom Davis coming on to replace him.
Weston then produced one of the moves of the match when Barry McConnell fed Heal, he cut inside and found Marc McGregor but his shot was too weak and too straight at keeper Steven Williams who gathered easily.
Heal then produced a cross from the right but the ball was too close to Williams and the danger was annulled.
However, Weston opened the scoring on 29 minutes and again the impressive Heal was involved. Ryan Harley fed McConnell who in turn freed up Heal in space, he put over a pin point cross and Powell steered a bullet header past the static Williams and high into the net.
Lewes should have equalised before half time when Dale Binns galloped down the left, his cross was met by the head of Andrew Drury but he failed to trouble Northmore and the chance was wasted. Lewes came out the more determined side in the second half and began to exert themselves on the game, pushing forward they had the Weston defence at sixes and sevens as their crisp passing and moving off the ball caused all sorts of problems for the home defence. Drury missed a golden opportunity to equalise by firing wide when well placed and Booth brought a fine save out of Northmore by forcing the keeper to go full length to grab his low drive. The writing was on the wall for the home side just before the hour mark when a cross from the right was turned home by Booth who had made space for himself in the box. The visitors should have gone ahead moments later but a shot from Matt groves cannoned against the post and rebounded to safety. The let off was short lived however when after 77 minutes Groves made amends when he made himself first to a rebound after Booth had headed against the crossbar, Groves, reacting quickest smashed the ball home. Weston pushed forward looking for a reply but stout defending and some woeful finishing by the home side denied Weston, who are still looking to record their first victory against the side from Sussex.
