Weston-super-Mare AFC - Match Reports
Match reports - Season 2007 - 2008
Team Bath 1 v 0 Weston-super-Mare
14/10/2007 -F A Cup - 3.00pm
Cloudy
Weston were dumped out of the FA Cup on Sunday by the students from Bath in a game that failed to ignite any enthusiasm for the watching faithful. A game that was dominated by long balls was lost to an own goal midway through the second half, but to be truthful Weston did nothing throughout the game to trouble their hosts, a team from a league below them, a team that they should have beaten, but once again when it came to the crunch the Seagulls were never able to gain the upper hand, never showing the kind of football that has seen them win their last four league games. Credit must go to Team Bath, they closed Weston down very quickly and Weston's response was to try to re-create the one-touch football that they have played so well this season. Time and again those deft little flicks did not come off, but that did not stop them repeatedly trying them, repeatedly giving the ball away, and in the end very quickly running out of ideas on how to break down a well organised defence, too many players simply "did not show up" for this game.
Manager Tony Ricketts left out defender Michael Taylor and recalled Marc McGregor to midfield, with Craig Rand and skipper Andrew Robertson in the centre of defence. The hosts got off to a flying start forcing two corners in the opening 4 minutes, and their next chance came from a free kick which Dean Smith drilled wide. The first we saw of Weston was when Ryan Harley played the ball through to Gareth Hopkins but he was unable to properly control the ball and the defender easily cleared the ball upfield where the lightning quick Josh Llewellyn pounced on the ball and forced keeper Ryan Northmore to tip his stinging drive over the bar. The resultant corner was not properly cleared by the Weston defence and Ben Thomson shot over.
The Seagulls had another let off when a dangerous cross from the left was headed behind by Ben Willshire just as Llewellyn was about to pounce. Llewellyn then set Smith free but he hurried his effort and put the ball wide.
It was 30 minutes before Weston had a sniff at goal when a free kick from Ryan Harley was inches wide, minutes later Harley then put over another free kick but this time Rand headed wide.
The home side continued to press forward as the half came to a close and Smith volleyed just over before Northmore had to go down on his knees to hold on to a long range effort from Matt Townley. Townley then saw another snap shot charged down by Willshire.
The second half got no better for Weston, Willshire tried to put McGregor through but his ball was just too long and just as it seemed that a replay was on the cards the killer blow arrived. Just seconds after coming on as a substitute Adi Adams cut down the right and as he made ground into the area his cross along the six-yard line was inadvertently turned into his own net by Barry McConnell.
With still a quarter of the game to go Weston had time to get back into the game but the only time they troubled their hosts was when Wilson forced keeper Darren Chitty to go full length to palm away his drive, and then Dean Grubb tricked his way down the left and put over a perfect cross which Hopkins met with his head but steered the ball back across goal and wide.
That basically sums up Weston's participation in the game, one shot on target in 90 minutes is simply not good enough. Out of the Cup and with that goes the chance of banking some much needed revenue. Let's hope that this dip in form is not carried over to their league programme, and they can get back to winning ways with two home games in quick succession. On Saturday they entertain sixth placed Bishop's Stortford and on Monday (Oct 22nd) they host Eastleigh with a 7.45pm kick off
