Hampton & Richmond 4 - 1 Weston-super-Mare
16/08/2008 - Blue Square South Division - 3:00pm
Cloudy
After a stunning start to the season, Weston were comprehensively defeated by last year's play-off finalists Hampton & Richamond.
The Seagulls had gained a maxiumium six-point haul from their opening two games, but the hosts registered their first win after two successive draws.
Weston's preparations for the fixture recieved a blow when the Seagulls' new signing Cedric Abraham, a Birmingham-based central defender, was directed to the wrong ground and arrived to late to be included in the starting line-up.
This meant that Manager Tony Ricketts had to play player/Assistant Manager Andrew Gurney in defence rather than midfield, with strikers Marvin Brown and Ryan Havard receiving little service as a result.
Weston were first to threaten when Gurney's free-kick extended home keeper Matt Lovett, but it was the Beavers who took the lead on 10 minutes. Ryan Northmore looked to have Stuart Lake's free Kick from the edge of the area covered, but the ball took a wicked late deflection off Ben Willshire and nestled in the opposite corner.
Hampton increased their lead seven minutes later when lake nodded down shaun McCauley's free-kick into the path of former Sutton United man John Scarborough, who laid the ball back to lake and he hammered the ball home from 15 yards.
Two minutes later it was 3-0 when Hampton debutant Robbie Kember finished with a spectacular strike from 25 yards following a flowing move involving Graham Harper and McCauley.
Weston pulled one back on 26 minutes when Ben Wells broke from midfield and held off a number of challenges before his weighted cross was well converted by the hard-working Ryan Havard.
As the seagulls enjoyed a good spell it looked like their hope of rescuing something from the game would rest on which side was to score the important next goal. After Darren Mullings had a header well taken by Lovett from Ashan Holgate's cross within a minute of Havard's Stike, it appeared that fortune could well favour the seagulls.
However, it was not to be and on 57 minutes Lawrence Yaku killed the game off when he broke through the Weston defence and crossed for Kember to beat Northmore from close range. Att: 365
