Weston 1 v 1 Eastleigh

WESTON maintained their unbeaten home record against fifth-placed Eastleigh, but again they surrendered a hard-earned lead late in the game.

From the side held by Maidenhead, Andy Gurney, who replaced injured Cedric Abraham, kept his place in the heart of the defence, while Ashan Holgate took over from Marc McGregor to lead the attack, while Ryan Paddock took over from Ben Willshire. And the side made a bright start, forcing a corner in the third minute from Ben Wells' free kick, and from Mark McKeever's free a minute later, Gurney had the ball in the net, but was denied by an offside flag.

As Eastleigh got going, Peter Adenyi made some penetrating runs down the right and on eight minutes David Hughes had an effort come back off the base of a post with Ryan Northmore beaten and two minues later, Anthony Riviere had an effort deflected for the first of the visitors' five first-half corners.

Northmore was in action on 28 minutes when he beat out Riviere's shot from skipper Tony Taggert's low cross from the right, but at the other end on 35 minutes, Dean Grubb, with a speedy run on the right, got past his marker, but Holgate just failed to connect with keeper Jason Matthews stranded. Minutes later McKeever had an effort blocked by a packed defence.

To finish the half, Taggart forced a save from Northmore and Riviere was just over with a strong effort when a free kick was not properly cleared.

McKeever wasted a free kick near the bye-line on the edge of the Eastleigh penaly area on 52 minutes and three minutes later, Marvin Brown fired wide from a good position. Weston had their best patch when they kept the ball on the deck instead of ballooning it upfield, giving the tall defence an easy time.

On the hour, Grubb fed Darren Mullings who freed McKeever on the right, but t here was no support for the strong cross and four minutes later, Gurney freed Grubb for a run from half-way, but again Holgate just failed to connect with the low cross.

With their first shot on target on 73 minutes, Weston took the lead when Matthews, the former Taunton and Weymouth keeper, could only knock out Brown's looping effort and the ball fell for Wells to crash it to the net with the keeper stranded.

Keeping up pressure, Wells forced a full-length save from Matthews two minutes later and five miinutes from t ime, Grubb forced a corner as he finished another strong run.

From the clearance, Eastleigh forced a corner and Andy Harris' flag kick was scrambled to the net by substitute James Baker. Att: 254
