Weston 2 v 1 Thurrock

WESTON bounced back from their FA Cup embarrassment of last week to record their fourth Blue Square South victoroy, but had to come from behind to beat third from bottom Essex visitors Thurrock, the winning goal coming two minutes from the end of normal time.

From the cup debacle, Ben Willshire, Ryan Paddock, James Palmer and Marvin Brown gave way to Guadeloupe international Ludovic Quintin, for his home debut, and Cedric Abraham in defence, Andy Gurney in midfield, and Marc McGregor led the attack, partnered by Darren Mullings.

The made a bright start, McGregor shaving an upright with a shot on the turn from Ben Wells' low cross on five minutes, but at the other end, Thurrock's liveliest striker, former Dorchester Town Jon Docker forced home skipper Charlie Comyn-Platt to clear his dangerous cross as he finished a speedy run down the left.

But Docker was not to be denied, putting the visitors ahead on 19 minutes with a superb 40-yard free kick that left keeper Ryan Northmore stranded.

A minute later, Weston almost equalised, Gurney's header from McGregor's cross missing by a matter of feet, but they did better on 28 minutes when Quintin fed Gurney whose low defence-splitting pass put Mullings through to beat visiting keeper David Blackmore from 15 yards.

Mullings was again put through on 32 minutes, this time by Ashan Holgate and although he beat his marker, his shot under pressure was just off target and a minute later, in another good move involving Mullings, Mark McKeever and McGregor, Holgate was just wide.

For the first half, Weston kept the ball low and played some entertaining football, but in the second period, they reverted to pumping high balls upfield, giving tall Thurrock defenders Rob Swaine and Matt Paine an easy passage and Docker created the best chance on 58 minutes, when his looping cross-cum-shot was just off target.

Weston brought on Dean Grubb and Brown for Gurney and McGregor on 81 minutes and their winner came on 88 minutes when McKeever's curling free kick from the right was knocked back across goal by Comyn-Platt when a defender and Blackmore knocked the ball on to the crossbar and Holgate bundled in the rebound on the far post.

Into injury time, Thurrock forced their only corner of the game, ended by substitute Craig Hughes blazing over.
