Welling United 2 Weston-super-Mare 0
18/10/2008 - Blue Square South Division - 3:00pm
Sunny
Weston slumped to another Blue Square defeat in Kent on Saturday but after gifting the hosts an early lead the Seagulls battled back into the game and with a little more luck in front of goal could well have come away with at least a share of the spoils. But just like many other occasions their lack of the killer instinct in front of goal was to be their shortfall.
Weston included Ludovic Quistin in their starting line-up despite the fact that he had only just flown back from Guadeloupe where he had been representing his country in the FIFA Digicel Cup, with Michael Green still nursing an injured toe, Ludovic performed well.
Weston got off to the worst possible start after just three minutes when the ball was needlessly given away by Dean Grubb, Welling broke quickly and when the ball was chipped through to the forward line Weston skipper Charlie Comyn-Platt could not get a proper head on to the ball to steer it back to keeper Ryan Northmore, the speedy debutant Jerome Anderson pounced on the loose ball to calmly slot it under the advancing Northmore and into the far corner.
Two minutes later and it should have been two when following a corner Adam Gross headed the ball back across the face of the goal only to see Anderson's shot deflected by an outstretched Weston boot.
Northmore was called into action on the quarter hour when he had to dive full length to palm away a drive from Lee Blackburn and then moments later Weston had a great chance to equalise when Marc McGregor found himself clear of the defence but as keeper Jamie Turrner came off his line McGregor's chip over his head cannoned off the crossbar and with no Weston player up in support the ball was hastily cleared.
Ryan Johnson was next to test Northmore with a hook shot which the keeper did well to save before the hosts went two up just past the half hour. And ironically it came from a wasted Weston free kick, another quick break saw Anderson feed Blackburn and he slotted the ball home with ease.
Welling then lost midfielder Johnson with a calf strain and he was replaced by youngster Richard Stevens and just before the break Weston wasted another free kick opportunity when Andy Gurney fired over from 20 yards out.
Weston began the second half in determined mood and a neat move involving Grubb and McGregor led to a chance for Darren Mullings but keeper Turner was equal to the task and dived low to turn the ball away. Ben Wells then saw his effort turned over by Turner as Weston continued to look for that elusive break. McGregor then forced a point blank save from Turner before moments later he forced Turner into another fine save after forcing his way into the area.
It was all Weston at this point but that vital breakthrough eluded them, in an effort to break back into the game Weston brought on Ryan Havard and Cedric Abrahamfor Mark McKeever and Ben Willshire but they could not find that vital final touch.
The home side shook off the Weston pressure and came back into the game and Northmore had to be at his very best when he denied Ellis Green with a magnificent flying save after hesitation in clearing his lines by Abraham had given the winger his chance. In the dying moments Mullings almost pulled a goal back for the Seagulls with a flying header but Turner was able to scramble the ball away. Whilst at the other end Northmore again came to the rescue by denying substitute Joe Healy with an outstretched foot. Another game in which Weston conceded early and were forced to play catch up, they will have to put a stop to these early presents if they intend to keep their mid table position. They can start on Monday evening when struggling Newport County pay a visit to the Woodspring Stadium.
