Weston 0 v 1 Bath City
01/11/2008 - Blue Square South Division - 3:00pm
Rain
Bath City left the Woodspring Stadium on Saturday with all three points gift wrapped for them in this West Country derby. Atrocious defending let in former Seagull David Gilroy just after the break and he made no mistake by firing home into an empty net.
Weston could have been out of sight by half time if their finishing had been up to standard, but once again as so often happens they were left to rue the missed chances.. Mark Mckeever was guilty of missing two chances although he was terrifically unlucky to see his 30 yard volley smash against the crossbar with keeper Paul Evans beaten all ends up, But Darren Mullings was guilty of the miss of the match following the McKeever volley, the rebound falling nicely into his path and with Evans still helpless on the deck, Mullings found the goal at his mercy but instead of taking his time his wild shot flew yards wide of the empty net.
McKeever then missed another chance to open the scoring when Ashan Holgate's astute pass put Ryan Havard through on the Bath goal, but a perfectly timed tackle by Chris Holland on the edge of the area scooped the ball away. It fell to McKeever who chose to try to hit it into the top corner instead of shooting across Evans and the ball flew wide. Good work between Mullings and Havard then set up McKeever but the ball landed on his least favoured right foot and Bath were able to clear the threat..
The visitors had proved little danger in the first half, their best chances fell to Sekani Simpson who headed over from a cross from the left and then hesitation between Andy Gurney and Weston keeper Ryan Northmore allowed Mark Badman to nip in between the pair but he headed straight at Northmore. Whilst some neat interpassing freed up the Romans skipper Jim Rollo but his thunderous strike sailed over the bar.
The second half was a different story as the visitors began to take control and the only goal of the game came four minutes in when a mistake by Weston skipper Charlie Comyn-Platt proved to be the deciding factor. Closing in on a through ball out on the left he had enough time to clear the ball with his left foot, but to everyone's surprise he played the ball across the 18 yard box to Northmore with his weaker right foot. The ball was snapped up by the lurking Gilroy, who was fresh from scoring 4 goals in midweek, who went round the stranded keeper and gleefully stroked the ball home from 8 yards into the open net. Gilroy was almost gifted a second when Ludovic Quistin slipped as he attempted to chest the ball down, the ball fell to Gilroy who spotting Northmore off his line, chipped the keeper only to see his effort land on top of the net.
Weston tried to get back into the game but all to often they were thwarted by a resolute Bath defence and their own wayward passing and even substitutes Grubb and McGregor failed to inspire the Seagulls and in the end the visitors ran out worthy winners leaving Weston to rue another defensive blunder.
