Basingstoke belied their lowly League position to give Weston a football lesson at the Woodspring Stadium on Saturday. They took full advantage of some absolutely shocking defending to record a well deserved victory over a home side that looked out of sorts all afternoon.

The visitors almost opened the scoring after 30 seconds when Mitchell Bryant found himself clear on the edge of the area but Weston keeper Ryan Northmore came to the rescue by saving with his chest. The first chance that fell to Weston saw Marc McGregor fire wide from 18 yards.

The first goal arrived on 10 minutes when a mistake by the Weston defender Ryan paddock allowed Sido Jombarti to slip in behind him and chip Northmore, the ball sailed over the keepers head and landed nicely on the head of Phil Ruggles who gleefully headed into the unguarded net.

Weston should have got on level terms when Marvin Brown, on the edge of the area chipped the ball across in front of goal but no Weston attacker had followed play and the chance went begging.

McGregor then tested keeper Ross Kitteridge before Basingstoke doubled their lead on 37 minutes and again it was another glaring defensive error that allowed Ruggles time and space in the area to bring the ball under control and calmly fire under Northmore.

The second half saw Weston huff and puff but completely unable to break down a defence that was superbly led by giant centre half Joe Dolan and it was no surprise when the visitors increased their lead on 61 minutes. Again another defensive blunder saw Paddock, who was having a nightmare, lose possession in his own area, robbed easily by Ruggles the centre forward played the ball across the area and there was Jerome Maledon to slide the ball into the empty net.

The only bright spark for the Weston fans was the sight of Craig Rand coming on as a substitute in the 68th minute after almost a year out with injury. The sight of the blond centre back in a white jersey was a sight for sore eyes, and he made it look as though he had never been away.

This was an absolute shocker from Weston who now face the busy Xmas period low on confidence and seemingly devoid of ideas on how to return to winning ways.
