New Caretaker manager Andy Gurney travelled to York Road with a severely depleted squad for his first game in charge. Missing first team regulars, Darren Mullings, Ryan Havard, Cedric Abraham and himself, all serving suspensions, he was further hampered with left back Ludovic Quistin away in International duty, but as so often happens when a new face takes the helm, the players turned in a much better, determined, and disciplined performance against the league high flyers, and with Craig Rand starting his first game for almost a year, they were worthy of the point they battled so hard for.
The home side started at a terrific pace and should have opened the scoring after just 20 seconds when a cross from the right found Ben Surey in space just 4 yards out but his header was straight at keeper Ryan Northmore and he gathered comfortably.
Weston's first chance came when a through ball from Ben Wells found Marc McGregor, looking up he spotted home keeper Shane Gore off his line but his tame effort went straight at the grateful keeper.
The home side's policy of shoot on sight would have caused the Seagulls a lot more worries had they been able to keep their efforts on target and both Ashley Smith and Surey were guilty of glaring misses when well placed. McGregor then wasted another opportunity by firing tamely at Gore before the home side were guilty of the miss of the match.
Following a corner for Weston the home side broke quickly down the left, the dangerous Dale Binns got to the by-line and his cross deflected off Mark Nisbet and Northmore could only parry the ball to the feet of Rocky Baptiste, the striker, who has a nasty habit of scoring against the Seagulls blasted over the bar from just 2 yards.
Dean grubb then presented Maidenhead with another opportunity by losing the ball in midfield, the ball found Smith but again his first time effort was off target.
The second half saw Weston apply a lot more pressure on the home defence without seriously troubling Gore, the best chance came when Wells let fly with a terrific strike from 25 yards, the ball crashed against the crossbar with Gore beaten but came back with such force that McGregor, standing 5 yards out, was unable to control his header and it sailed over the bar. Wells then saw his corner cleared off the line and then saw another effort from a free kick just clear the bar.
This was a much better all round performance from Weston, their determination was clear for all to see and they can now go into the busy Xmas period with some renewed confidence, and with players due back from suspension the squad should be more than capable of maintaining their mid table position.
