Bishop's Stortford 2 Weston-super-Mare 1
20/12/2008 - Blue Square South Division - 3:00pm
Cloudy
Weston can feel hard done by to come away from Woodside Park with nothing to show, but they only have themselves to blame after putting in a dire second half performance which saw them fail to register a shot on target throughout the second period. Their fighting display of the first half was completely forgotten as they toiled to break down a strong Stortford back line.
The Seagulls were without skipper Charlie Comyn-Platt who failed a fitness test but introduced new loan signing Tommaso Parrinello from Bristol Rovers and he produced a competent display at left back.
Weston were the first to threaten but wasted a free kick in the first minute before Dean grubb and Marvin Brown combined to set up Marc McGregor but his shot was saved by keeper Nicky Eyre at the near post. The first opportunity for the home side came when on loan signing from Fulham Lewis Smith chased a flick on but he shot wide.
McGregor then tried an audacious lob from 25 yards but Eyre managed to catch the ball under his bar. Parrinello and Brown set up McGregor for another chance but again he wasted the opportunity by firing wide and then Ben Wells smashed a free kick over the bar.
Against the run of play the home side took the lead on 28 minutes, Duane Jackman played a through ball into the path of Smith and he beat Ryan Northmore with a neat flick into the far corner.
Within a minute the Seagulls were level when a neat combination of Grubb, Mark McKeever and Ashan Holgate, playing some delightful interpassing, set up Grubb to cross the ball to the unmarked McGregor and this time he made no mistake by coolly firing past Eyre.
Wells then tested Eyre with a low shot and then m ore controlled football allowed Holgate a shot at goal but again Eyre was equal to the challenge.
The beginning of the second half saw the visitors again pressing, a long throw from Parrinello was flicked on by McGregor but Grubb was just unable to reach the loose ball. The home side came more into the game from that point onwards and Weston were unable to stamp any meaningful control on the game, Liam Hopkins forced Weston keeper Northmore into the save of the game when the stopper brilliantly tipped over his free kick and Jackman also tested Northmore with a rasping shot which the keeper held.
The home side were doing all the pressing without creating too much trouble for the Weston defence but it all cam undone on 81 minutes. Having given away a free kick the Weston defence got into all sorts of panic mode when the ball was delivered into the box, their failure to properly clear the ball away from danger saw the ball fall to the feet of Danny Green, and, although there were bodies in front of him, he managed to drill his shot through the crowd of players and past the unsighted Northmore.
Once again there was one bright spot for the travelling faithful, and again it was the sight of Craig Rand back doing what he does best. The powerful centre back put in a man of the match performance which belied his year long injury woes. Weston will play worse than this and win but with the heavy Xmas schedule about to start caretaker manager Andy Gurney will have to move quickly to bring in the couple of players he feels the squad desperately needs.
