Weston 0 v 3 Hampton & Richmond Borough
03/01/2009 - Blue Square South Division - 3:00pm
Sunny
Despite having the majority of possession in a first half in which they forced ten corners, Weston went into the beak a goal down and then lost out completely during the second period to a far superior Hampton side for whom Ben Wright notched a well-taken hat-trick.
The game was in doubt right up to kick off but referee Antony Coggins deemed the pitch playable and despite several players losing their footings in the icy conditions both teams contributed to an entertaining game.
The visitors were first to show their hand and Stuart lake fired wide after three minutes. Ben Wells was first to show for the home side when he forced a corner after three minutes. On ten minutes the Weston goal had a lucky escape when Lawrence Yaku somehow managed to contrive to hit the post from all of three yards out with keeper Ryan Northmore grasping at thin air.
Northmore made amends when he managed to catch a free kick right under his crossbar but the home side fell behind on sixteen minutes when a mistake by Wells, giving the ball away needlessly, allowed Wright the time and space to plant a low drive to the right of Northmore and into the bottom corner.
Weston tried to respond immediately and Marc McGregor was unlucky when his header from 5 yards out was somehow turned behind by visiting keeper Matt Lovett. Weston then had claims for a penalty turned down after new signing Scott Partridge was upended in the box.
Northmore then saved Weston by diving to his left to keep out a drive from Wright, then repeated the act to deny the lively forward. Lovett then produced the save of the game to deny Wells who struck a perfect rising shot only to see Lovett fly to his left to palm the ball away.
Partridge then ran fully forty yards before firing just wide. The second half began with the visitors on top and Wright, who seemed to be at the very heart of everything the visitors did, was only just over with a free kick from 30 yards.
Weston should have equalised on fifty five minutes when a mistake by skipper Dean Wells let in Partridge with a clear run at goal. The striker noticed Lovett off his line and attempted to chip the ball over his head, unfortunately for Partridge and Weston the ball sailed a yard wide.
This was the closest Weston came to salvaging something out of the game and the visitors took full control from there on in, Wright scored his second goal on 58 minutes when he cut in from the left and placed a curling shot wide of Northmore's despairing dive and into the far corner.
His days work was complete on 75 minutes when Northmore dropped a cross from the left, in his haste to retrieve the ball he was adjudged to have brought down a Hampton player and referee Coggins pointed to the spot, despite his protests, for which Northmore was yellow carded, he could do nothing to prevent Wright from stepping up and sending him the wrong way from the spot. The final chance of the game fell to the visitors when substitute Nana Badu was through but he shot straight at Northmore
