Thurrock 0 v Weston 1
17/01/2009 - Blue Square South Division - 3:00pm
Cloudy
Weston came home from Essex with the three points safely in the bag but it was a dire struggle against a team three places above them in the table but with the same number of points. The game was sadly lacking in skill but the Seagulls will have been pleased to provide caretaker manager Andy Gurney with his first victory since taking over.
Weston paraded new signings Adie Harris, signed from Newport on Monday and new loan signing Manny Williams who put pen to paper on a month long deal on Friday morning plus Tommaso parrinello who rejoined the club from Bristol Rovers in the week.
The first major incident of the game occurred in the 10th minute when Weston's Mark McKeever was lucky to escape with a yellow card after seemingly elbowing Kenny Clark but then the home side began to dominate proceedings and they created the first opening when a quick break allowed Che Stadhart to put in a cross from the right, the ball fell to Kenny Beaney but he fired across the goal and narrowly wide.
Partridge then tried to set up Williams but his through ball was hit too hard and the chance was gone, Partridge then set up darren Mullings but his weak shot was easily gathered by home keeper David Blackmore. Weston then had a lucky escape when a miskick by Matt Paine fell to team-mate Andy Sambrook but his wild shot sailed over the bar and out of the ground.
Weston should have taken the lead on the stroke of half time when they were awarded a free kick out on the right. McKeever swung the ball over into the box and Craig Rand rose above everybody but his glancing header shaved the far post and went behind.
The second half began with the home side awarded a free kick when Mullings needlessly brought down David Bryant. The free kick from Beaney beat Northmore in the Weston goal but crashed against the crossbar and went behind. The move of the match almost brought the opening goal when Fola Orilonishe went on a 70 yard run, weaving in and out of the Weston defence, evading four tackles and working his way into the six yard box before unleashing a left foot shot that Northmore somehow managed to turn behind. Northmore then pulled off the save of the match when a cross eluded Rand and landed plum on the head of Bryant. His powerful header from 5 yards out saw Northmore again stun the visitors with a point blank save.
On the hour mark Weston scored what proved to be the only goal of the game when they were awarded a free kick some 22 yards out. Up stepped Ben Wells to fire in a low drive which beat Blackmore, struck a post, and flew into the far corner.
From that moment on Weston grew in confidence and could have increased their lead with efforts from Wells, Williams and skipper Charlie Comyn-Platt, either saved or narrowly wide.
This win lifted the Seagulls up one place in the league and more importantly put another two points between them and the relegation spots. On Saturday the Seagulls face another vital game when they take on second from bottom Fisher Athletic at the Woodspring. Kick Off is at 3.00pm and another win then will set them up nicely for the Severnside derby away at Newport County on the 28th.
