Weston 3 v 1 Fisher Athletic

24/01/2009 - Blue Square South Division - 3:00pm

Cloudy

Weston gave home debuts to on loan Manny Williams and new signing Adrian Harris at the Woodspring on Saturday and both played a significant part in helping the Seagulls to a second successive victory over their visitors from Surrey.

Two goals either side of half time allowed Weston to rack up their first back to back league wins since August over a determined Fisher side whose display belied their lowly league position, and who caused the home side several problems during a first half in which they were unlucky not to go into the beak ahead. Weston, despite having the majority of the play were unable to break down a defence that was superbly marshalled by Ex-Seagull Cedric Abraham.

The visitors showed plenty of passion during the first half and were unlucky with the first chances on goal when Nicky Greene and Warren Waugh both wasted chances by shooting wide. Abraham was unlucky not to open the scoring when his volley from a corner was superbly turned over his bar by Weston keeper Ryan Northmore, and the keeper had to be on his toes minutes later when he got down low to palm away an effort from Joe Howe.

Weston's best chances saw Manny Williams, Scott Partridge and Darren Mullings all miss and a well struck shot from Adrian Harris struck a defender and was deflected away to safety. Mullings also saw his effort cannon off a defender after he had been put through by some good work from Dean Grubb.

Right on the stroke of half time the home side took the lead from a corner out on the left. The ball was swung over and Craig Rand, who hardly put a foot wrong all afternoon, rose above everybody to head home via the crossbar.

Within three minutes of the restart Weston doubled their advantage when following a free kick the ball was launched forward by Northmore, straight into the path of Mullings who wasted no time in clipping the ball over the head of keeper Ashlee Jones and into the top corner.

This should have settled the home side but they put themselves under pressure when Adrian Harris was harshly adjudged to have handled the ball and up stepped Seb Schoburgh to calmly slip the ball under the diving body of Northmore. This spurred the home side and they began to play some delightful football culminating in the third goal just ten minutes from the end. A vicious shot from Mullings was too hot for Jones to handle, he could only palm the ball into the path of Williams who gleefully smashed the ball home.

Weston could have increased their lead but some good goalkeeping from Jones kept the score down.

Weston are at home this Saturday to St. Albans City kick off 3.00pm, then follow this with another home game on Monday evening (Feb 2nd) when last season's FA Cup heroes Havant & Waterlooville come calling. This game kicks off at 7.45pm.

Attendance: 231
