Weston 1 v 1 St Albans

Weston fought back from a goal down to salvage a point after a poor first half performance which saw them trailing at the break. The first half was dominated by the visitors in particular their giant 6'7" skipper Ben Watson. Weston's long ball tactics played right into the hands of the centre back and the efforts from the home side were few and far between.

Weston were without skipper Charlie Comyn-Platt through suspension and were also missing Ashan Holgate who suffered a serious injury at Newport on Wednesday night. Ben Willshire was recalled to the defence with Adrian Harris taking over the captaincy.

The first chance of the game fell to James Fisher but Northmore in the home goal saved easily. The visitors should have opened the scoring after 10 minutes when good work down the left enabled Gary Cohen to fire across the six-yard box but the ball was just too far in front of the onrushing Paul Hakim.

The deadlock was broken in the 20th minute when St. Albans were awarded a free kick out on the right. When the ball was played in by Jonathan Hunt hesitation by Northmore allowed Adam Everitt the time to nip in and head the ball home.

Weston almost replied immediately when Ben Wells put Emmanuel Williams through with only keeper Paul Bastock to beat but somehow the keeper managed to get a hand to the firmly struck ball and tip the ball over the bar.

The second half saw a different Weston, they brought on Marc McGregor for the ineffective Dean Grubb and he was instrumental in setting up the equaliser. Controlling a through ball he turned and fed the ball through to Williams who raced into the area and planted a well struck drive past the exposed Bastock.

Weston then proceeded to control the game for the next 20 minutes but the visitors again missed a chance to regain the lead when Hunt played a ball into the six-yard box but somehow Hassan Sulaiman failed to connect from just 3 yards out. Weston wasted chances to take the lead with efforts from Wells and Williams going wide, but Wells was unlucky to see his rasping drive turned behind for a corner.

St. Albans wasted a glorious chance to steal the points near the end when substitute Simon Martin crossed the ball into the box but Hakim contrived to smash the ball wide from just 6 yards.

The home side should have won the game in the dying seconds when Darren Mullings was put through with only Bastock to beat but a last ditch challenge saw the ball deflected behind.
