Weston-super-Mare AFC 1 - Bognor Regis Town 2
14/02/2009 - Blue Square South Division - 3:00pm
Cloudy
Weston, despite having the majority of the play, despite creating the majority of chances, and despite forcing sixteen corners were undone by the sucker punch in the dying seconds to hand the basement club only their second away win of the season. Time and again they were denied by some desperate defending and the form on new keeper Anthony Ender, who turned in a magnificent Man of the Match performance.
Weston almost took the lead in the 2nd minute when neat play between Marc McGregor, Tomasso Parrinello allowed Manny Williams to control the ball, turn in a split second but place his effort just wide of the far post. For the visitors the main threat came from breakaways and the highly impressive Jahson Downes, the youngster on loan from Reading showed neat touches throughout the game and kept the home defence on their toes all afternoon.
His first chance of the game saw Weston defender Craig Rand have to throw himself in front of the ball to block his effort but he had better luck on 25 minutes when the visitors took the lead. A sweeping 19 pass move starting in their own half, probed the Weston defence, the ball was brought back into their own half before a tremendous through ball freed up Steven Brinksworth out on the right. His cross into the box was met by the head of Downes and he gave home keeper Ryan Northmore no chance from 10 yards out.
From then on it was almost all Weston as the home side threw everything at the visitors in an effort to pull level at the break. They almost equalised immediately when keeper Ender spilled a free kick from the home side's new recruit Jack Compton, luckily for the visitors the ball spun out of his hands but over the bar.
Williams then finished off a passing move by dragging his shot wide of the post, and then missed a glorious chance to equalise when put through, instead of shooting he chose to try and beat one person too many and he was robbed by a last ditch tackle. Bognor had one chance to double their lead before the interval but Northmore got down quickly to his right to palm away a shot from Downes.
The second half saw the home side pin the visitors back in their own half for long periods but once again they found Ender almost impossible to beat. He saved from Williams, Darren Mullings and McGregor in quick succession, but was almost beaten by one of his own defenders when Michael Byrne headed the ball out of his hands. Weston were denied a penalty claim when Williams appeared to be pushed over in the box and were denied again by the save of the game when Ender flew to his right to palm away one handed a fierce free kick from Adrian Harris.
Weston finally managed to claw their way back into the game on 85 minutes, when from their 16th corner of the game the ball was not cleared and it fell to substitute Marvin Brown, turning quickly he fired through a crowd of players and beat Ender low to his left. Weston went all out for the winner but were undone in injury time when a breakaway found Downes in space on the left, he cut inside but his shot came off a Weston defender and fell nicely into the path of Nathan Lynch who calmly stroked the ball home from five yards out.
