Weston-super-Mare 3 - 1 Braintree Town

Weston strolled to three points against a below par Braintree at the Woodspring, controlling the game throughout the Seagulls could and probably should have scored more than the three goals they got. Playing a controlled passing game the home side dominated from start to finish and produced one of their best performances to date.

The home side could have opened the scoring in the 1st minute when neat football between Ben Wells, Manny Williams and Marc McGregor let in Jack Compton but his fierce shot was blocked. Braintree then had their best chance of the game when a under hit back pass from Michael Green caught Weston keeper Ryan Northmore out, his hurried clearance was blocked and the ball fell neatly to Sean Marks but he headed over from five yards.

The opening goal came on 13 minutes when Weston were awarded a free kick and Compton floated the ball over the wall and out of the reach of keeper Craig Holloway.

Things got a lot better for the home side on 18 minutes when from a Compton corner defender Craig Rand towered above everybody to head powerfully into the bottom corner.

Braintree then reminded the home side that they were still in the game with a thundering 25 yard screamer from Lee Burns which beat Northmore but crashed against the bar.

On the stroke of half time Weston should have sewn up the game when Williams fed Mcgregor but his shot flew high and wide and then Wells forced Holloway into a full length save, when clean through.

The second half was all Weston as they piled forward looking for the goal that would kill off the game but they had to wait until the 67th minute when again neat work down the left allowed Compton to put in a telling cross that was turned in at the far post by substitute Dean Grubb.

The visitors did manage to claw a goal back on 76 minutes when the Weston defence seemed to go awol at a corner and allowed Marks a free header into the unguarded net.

Not to be outdone the home side pressed forward and should have added to their score as both McGregor and substitute Marvin Brown both had opportunities but were denied by Holloway.
