Weston 2 v 1 Bromley
21/03/2009 - Blue Square South Division - 3:00pm
Sunny
For the third time this season Weston recorded back to back league victories, this one virtually guaranteeing them a place in the Blue Square South for next season, but they were made to sweat by a resolute Bromley side that never gave up despite being outplayed for most of the game.
Weston suffered a late injury blow when substitute Jack Compton, on the field for less than 30 minutes, had to be stretchered off after falling heavily seconds after he had forced keeper gareth Williams into a flying save. It is feared the left sided midfielder has suffered a fracture to his left ankle
Weston got off to a great start and almost took the lead inside then first 10 seconds when Manny Williams broke down the right from the kick off but his cross was just too high for Marvin Brown.
Marc McGregor, who could easily have notched a hat trick then got his head onto a fierce Ben Wells shot but the deflected header just flew wide. The hone side opened the scoring on 9 minutes when a Wells free kick was headed back across goal by Charlie Comyn-Platt and new boy Alex Kite was on hand to forcibly head home.
Weston created most of the chances throughout the first half with McGregor instrumental in almost everything the home side produced. He first of all set up Williams but the little striker shot over, then he got his head to a Tom Parrinello cross but the header was brilliantly turned over by Williams. Wells then fluffed a chance to double the lead when he got on the end of a ball from Brown but his effort was too near keeper Williams
The visitors equalised with their only effort on target of the first half when good work down the right ended with Luke I'Anson rifling a shot past the Weston keeper Ryan Northmore from all of 25 yards.
Weston almost regained the lead immediately when a tremendous 30 yard free kick from McGregor thundered against the crossbar, dropped down onto the line and was hacked away. Comyn-Platt then saw his shot deflected and Williams did well to hang on to the ball right under his bar.
McGregor was at it again at the start of the second half when a Williams shot was blocked, the rebound fell to McGregor whose left foot volley struck a post and rebounded out.
Weston regained the lead on 52 minutes when good work down the right saw Williams feed Kite, his cross across the area was headed back by Wells and up stepped Brown at the far post to stoop and head home. Brown then saw his next effort scrape the post as Weston went for the kill. Compton, who had replaced the hobbling Williams saw his first involvement almost produce a goal when he broke down the left but his cross was brilliantly cut out by Williams who dived at the feet of Scott Partridge to deny a certain goal. Compton then suffered his serious injury and was replaced by Ben Willshire.
The home side had Parrinello to thank for a last ditch tackle on Warren McBean as the visitors strived to gain an equaliser. McBean was just about through the Weston rearguard until Parrinello came to the rescue.
