Whilst Weston may well point to the fact that their injury list is as long as anyone's arm there can be no disguising the fact that on Saturday they were completely outplayed, outfought, outthought and steamrollered by a club who had lost just once in their previous 8 games, and had conceded just once in that sequence.
The old faults that have become so frustrating this season were again in evidence as they needlessly gave the ball away, were second to every ball and at times it looked as though some of them just could not wait to get on the bus back home.
Oh! for a defender who can actually clear the danger and find another white shirt in the process, Oh! for a creative midfielder who can actually make space for himself and bring other players into play. Oh! for a tall centre forward who can actually win a high ball that is pumped forward on a monotonous basis. The Jeckyl and Hyde that is Weston was certainly in evidence this weekend. That is now 3 losses in succession, and whilst there may not be a need to look over our shoulders for a week or two it should not be forgotten that they need 5 points to be absolutely certain of staying in this division. Let's hope that the chasing pack slip up.
The injury list mentioned earlier was again to the fore with Michael Green, Jack Compton, Manny Williams, Darren Mullins, Tom Parrinello, Dayle Grubb all missing but on a positive note the return of McGregor, Kite and Bartlett did bring some relief but during the game Tom Evans came off with a slight concussion and Randy was substituted after feeling the effects of the hard pitches.
It might have been different if Scott Partridge's goal had been allowed to stand, he was adjudged to have been in an offside position when converting Ben Wells's cross, but once the home side got going there was only going to be one winner. The havoc caused down the right flank by Hassan Sulaiman and Jonathan Hunt proved to be effective time and again, and it was from one of these breaks that led to the opening goal. Salaiman left Ben Willshire for dead and his cross into the box was headed firmly home by Paul Hakim. The same pair then combined again but this time Hakim headed over. From a corner, headed back by the colossal Ben Martin, Adam Everitt somehow managed to hook the ball over from two yards out.
The second goal came from a corner when the ball was allowed to travel all the way across the Weston defence for James Fisher to knock back in and there was Martin to stoop low to head the ball home.
Weston never recovered from this, their only real chances of the half were efforts that did not seriously trouble the home keeper.
Weston lost Evans early in the second half and just after created their only real chance of the game when good work from substitute Matt Groves down the left saw his cross the ball into the path of Marvin Brown but his shot from the edge of the six-yard box crashed against the crossbar and rebounded to safety.
The third goal came on 77 minutes from another set piece. A corner from the left was allowed to travel onto the head of Simon Martin and the striker made no mistake with a firm header from 5 yards.
Substitute Gary Cohen forced Northmore into a full length save as the hosts went looking for more goals but thankfully the Seagulls managed to keep the score down to three.
