Weston 2 v Chesham 4
27/09/2008 - FA Cup, 2nd Qualifying Round - 3:00pm
Sun & Clouds
WESTON'S season is rapidly deteriorating as they were unceremoniously dumped out of this season's FA Cup by a side from the Southern League's Midland Division, two steps below them in the pyramid system.
They contributed to their own downfall by gifting two goals to the opposition and with so many defensive basic errors, like missing tackles and miskicking clearances, they were lucky not to concede more.
For some reason, defenders Cedric Abraham and new signing Ludovic Quistin were on the bench and took no part in the action, instead Ben Willshire was at left back and Ryan Paddock was in the centre of defence with skipper Charlie Comyn-Platt.
Yet it all started well as in the first five minutes they forced three corners and Marvin Brown, twice, and Mark McKeever forced excellent saves from Chesham keeper Bobby Smith.
But the visitors went in front from their first attack on eight minutes when Ryan Northmore dropped a cross from the right and as he tried to recover, was clattered by a Chesham player and as he lay prone on the ground, leading scorer Danny Burnell knocked into an empty net.
Although referee Mark Philpott from Falmouth looked towards his assistant, nothing was given and the goal stood. Minutes later, after a mix-up in the defence, Burnell wasted a good chance when he fired over from close range with an unmarked effort.
However, Chesham struck again on 15 minutes when, from a poor clearance, Danny Talbot drilled a 30-yard effort past an unsighted Northmore and worse was to come three minutes later when, trying to clear Talbot's free kick, Ashan Holgate headed over Northmore.
For the rest of the half, Weston had the better of the exchanges, forcing four more corners, but the nearest they came was on 24 minutes when McKeever curled a free kick just over. They did better on 40 minutes, however, when McKeever controlled Mike Green's high angled cross from the right and headed past Smith from 10 yards.
Three minutes later, Chesham struck again when John Kyriacou made a long unchallenged run from midfield and crossed for Darrell Cox to beat Northmore with an unmarked stooping header. Three minutes into the second half, McKeever struck again, firing wide of Smith, when he was put clear by Brown's knock down.
Weston brought on Andy Gurney for Paddock and when Willshire picked up a knock, Marc McGregor took over, and although they dominated territorial advantage, they failed to break down a solid Chesham defence, their best efforts falling to Ben Wells who forced a good save from Smith and Gurney going close with a distance free kick. Following the game, the club made the following statement: "In view of the result the club are bitterly disappointed in going out of the FA Cup at such an early stage, but can now concentrate all efforts in maintaining our Blue Square status".
