Weston 1 v Sudbury 2

Weston were dumped out of the FA Trophy by the BGB Midlands Division side AFC Sudbury in an encounter that saw one red card and ten yellow cards issued by Referee Brett Huxtable and over thirty free kicks awarded during the game.

If Weston had taken advantage of their territorial domination during the first half then they would have been home and dry by half time but as so often happens they failed to turn their domination into goals. Marvin Brown almost scored in the first minute when he wriggled free on the edge of the area but his shot hit the side netting and then on 19 minutes darren Mullings was fouled just outside the area, Andy Gurney stepped up but his effort was caught under his bar by keeper Paul Catley. Then twice in the space of two minutes Weston should have taken the lead, both from corners taken by Ben Wells. The first saw the ball rebound to Wells and his fierce shot was straight at Catley then from the second corner Marc McGregor's powerful header from six yards rebounded off the startled keeper and was cleared to safety.

During the first 45 minutes the visitors failed to register an effort on goal and Weston had one finaql chance to go into the interval ahead but when McGregor's shot rebounded off a defender Brown was unable to control the loose ball and the chance was lost.

The second half was just a couple of minutes old when the visitors had their first shot at goal. A long goal kick was chased by Kevin Hawes but he shot high and wide, and moments later the same two combined only this time Hawes shot over the bar.

The visitors took the lead on 55 minutes when a through ball split the Weston defence in two and allowed Craig Bussens the chance to run through on goal unchallenged, Bussens drew keeper Ryan Northmore before slipping a coolly taken shot under his body and into the far corner.

Weston almost equalised immediately when they were awarded a free kick which Andy Gurney fed to Wells his cross cum shot was hacked off the line by a desperate Sudbury boot. Things got worse for Weston on 73 minutes when substitute Mark McKeever sloppily gave the ball away, a quick break resulted in a thunderous shot rebounding off the post into the path of skipper gareth Heath, he had time to control the ball and place a shot wide of Northmore and the defender on the line to double the visitors lead.

Weston were reduced to 10 men on 87 minutes when Darren Mullings was shown a second yellow card but they did manage to pull a goal back a minute later when McKeever swung over a free kick from the edge of the area and Marvin Brown rose to head home. It was too little too late and the visitors held on for a well deserved win.
