Weston-super-Mare AFC - Match Reports

Match reports - Season 2007 - 2008

Weston-super-Mare 0 v 1 Plymouth Argyle
Extremely creditable pre-season start by the Seagulls

11/07/2007 -Friendly - 7.30pm

Created by Alan Cooper

An arguably highest profile football club to visit Weston for some 20+ years, a Plymouth Argyle squad (with an estimated value of 6M+!) visited the Woodspring Stadium last night (Wednesday 11th July 2007) and treated the near 700 crowd to an array of Coca Cola Championship skills, before easing ahead with a well taken 20 shot from supposed veteran Lee Hodges in the 20th minute. New manager Tony Ricketts braves did exceptionally well to hold the Championship side to 0-0 for the first 20 minutes, holding their illustrious opponents, however, acceptably it was only a matter of time before Argyle were to take the lead. The visitors captain for the night, and former 2M Fulham star fed Lee Hodges whose left foot curling shot deceived Weston keeper Ryan Northmore. The big goalkeeper had until then kept his goal very well intact and was a good match for the high profile strikers from Argyle.

Argyle, as expected had a number of further opportunities to score in the first half, but perhaps predictably, they overplayed the ball and were in no hurry to add to their 20th minute scoreline, although the likes of Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, Ryan Dickson. Rory Fallon - also making a notable second half return to the Woodspring, having played for Swansea City in their 3-1 victory at Weston this time last year - and the impressive Alos Buzasky all went close, having opportunities to add to the score.

Weston were impressive in their own right though and debutant Matt Hale, playing in a supportive right-back role, struck up an immediate understanding with goalkeeper Ryan Northmore. Last seasons Player of the Year, Craig Rand had yet another impressive showing, earning joint praise from both managers as well as the match-sponsors (Roof-Tek) award of man-of-the-match.earning his umpteenth bottle of champagne over the last few months!

The Seagulls could well have upset the copy book toward the end of the first half, a Matt Hale corner being headed powerfully goalwards by Rand. Weston also had two well directed free kicks towards the end of the first half, which noticeably had the Plymouth Argyle bench undertaking some animated activity; the Pilgrims coaching staff in particular wiping sweat from their brows as the energetic duo of Lewis Powell (signed from Bristol Rovers) and Lee Smith (from Cirencester Town) both went agonisingly close.

The second half saw a number of changes amongst both line ups; Argyle fielding a completely different line up. Weston also used the second half to experiment with several positional changes; Barry McConnell for example being used in three different positions in, such is the versatility of the playerwhich is sure to be of Westons great benefit for the forthcoming season. An entertaining second half continued and the Seagulls can be justifiably very pleased with their performance and manager Ricketts can be well pleased with start his charges have made.
