Weston-super-Mare AFC - Match Reports
Match reports - Season 2007 - 2008
Dorchester 1 v 2 Weston-super-Mare
22/09/2007 -Blue Square South - 3.00pm
Sunny
The Seagulls returned from Dorset with all three points to complete a perfect week, three games, three victories, and currently seventh position in the Blue Square South Division. Playing the open attacking football that has become their trademark this season, Weston fell behind to a very harsh penalty decision after just 4 minutes, but gradually wore down the opposition and their never-say-die attitude, coupled with their exceptional fitness, against a side that now train full time, saw them home with a winning goal superbly struck from a free kick with just 2 minutes remaining.
Weston went into the game still minus the injured Craig Rand and were dealt further blows when both Barry McConnell and Matt Hale failed pre-match fitness tests but as in previous games the players brought in coped adequately with what was set out before them, special mention for Michael Taylor who was superb in defence.
Weston fell behind after just 4 minutes when veteran Billy Clark was harshly adjudged to have handled a ball that bounced up in the penalty area and brushed his arm, the Referees Assistant did not flag for an infringement but Referee Lee Collins from Aldershot, fully 20 yards from the play signalled to the spot. Jon Docker stepped up and sent Ryan Northmore the wrong way to put the hosts one up.
Dorchester then had another opportunity when Jones Awuah broke free but Northmore comfortably held his effort. Northmore then did even better to brilliantly tip round the post a fierce free kick from Docker.
The first real chance of the game for Weston saw Dean Grubb and Ashan Holgate combine to set up Gareth Hopkins but his shot was saved by home keeper Darren Bechet. Aaron Wilson, Ben Willshire and Ryan Harley then exchanged some neat passes to allow Grubb the opportunity to shoot but his effort was too high, then Andy Robertson saw his effort deflected for a corner, and in the dying moments of the first half Holgate's snapshot drifted wide.
Weston started the second half positively and Hopkins freed up Grubb down the right, he cut inside and his low drive forced bechet to scramble the ball behind for a corner, the resulting kick was headed just over by the impressive Michael Taylor. Harley was next to try his luck but his effort ballooned over the bar before a slick passing move by the home side saw it ending with Nathaniel Peprah-Annan shooting wide. On the hour mark Weston pulled level when Harley drifted into the middle of the field before unleashing a fierce drive which took a slight deflection on it's way into the net.
It was all Weston from then on, substitute Marc McGregor was unlucky to see his 30 yard volley from a poor clearance sail just over and Hopkins headed straight at Bechet from a corner. With just 3 minutes remaining the Seagulls took a deserved lead when Hopkins was brought down by home skipper Alex Browne some 20 yards out. Harley stepped up and curled a superb shot out of the reach of Bechet and into the top corner.
Weston had further chances to increase their lead as the game drew to a close but in the end had to settle for just the 2 goals this time.
On Saturday Weston take a break from league action as they travel to Oxfordshire to take on BGB South & West side Oxford City in the 2nd Qualifying round of the FA Cup, the club are running a supporters coach to the game which is leaving the Woodspring Stadium at 11.30. If this game requires a replay it will take place on Monday (Oct 1st) with a kick off time of 7.45pm. If no replay is needed Weston will play Paulton Rovers in the Somerset Premier Cup on that evening
