Weston-super-Mare AFC - Match Reports
Match reports - Season 2007 - 2008
Sutton 0 v 3 Weston-super-Mare
06/10/2007 -Blue Square South - 3.00pm
Sun & Clouds
Weston recorded their fourth consecutive Blue Square league victory with this stroll in the Lane on Saturday. Never seeming to have to move out of second gear they eased their way into fifth spot in the league and in doing so condemned their hosts to bottom spot, and also recorded their first league double of the season.
The Seagulls were without veteran defender Billy Clark but welcomed back from injury the influential Craig Rand and his partnership with the young Mike Taylor proved a stubborn resistance that the hosts were unable to break down.
Sutton started brightly enough and were first to threaten with a corner in the opening minutes but once Weston seized the initiative the outcome was never in doubt.
Weston took the lead on 15 minutes when a quickly taken throw-in was picked up by Ashan Holgate, his through ball allowed leading scorer Gareth Hopkins to cut along the 18 yard line, brushing aside a weak challenge in the process, and planting a left foot shot beyond keeper Gareth Williams.
Ben Willshire then put over a teasing cross which Hopkins headed wide, but he had better luck moments later. A dubious free kick was awarded to Weston out on the left, this was just one of many puzzling decisions made by Referee David Rock, Sutton's John Scarborough and Hopkins had gone in for a 50-50 ball, both ended up on the floor, and the free kick went Weston's way. Willshire floated over a perfect ball and when Hopkins made contact he appeared to beck head the ball over the head of astonished keeper Williams and the ball flew just inside the near post.
The home side responded and Weston keeper Ryan Northmore was alert to push away a strong drive from the dangerous Warren McBean, the ball finally rebounding off Rand and over for a corner.
As the half drew top a close Hopkins had two chances to complete his hat trick, firstly he lost out in a race with keeper Williams for a long through ball and then after being set up by Holgate and Dean Grubb he was tackled just as he was about to let fly.
Sutton made a substitution at the start of the second half, taking off Asher Hudson and bringing on Mark Hammond, but it made no difference as the Seagulls wrapped things up on the hour mark. A well flighted free kick from the right saw both Hopkins and Aaron Wilson cleverly beat the offside trap and the sporting Hopkins allowed Wilson's neat flick to roll over the line to allow the youngster to record his first goal for the club.
The home side then threw everything at Weston in an attempt to salvage some pride and Northmore was again called on to deny Craig Watkins by saving his dangerous cross, and then palming away a fierce volley from the same player.
The only black mark on Weston's day came when Wilson collected a yellow card with just moments to go. This was another polished performance from the Division's second highest scorers and will set them up perfectly for the tricky FA Cup 3rd Qualifying Round game against Team Bath. In order not to clash with England's Euro 2008 Qualifier against Estonia, this game is taking place on Sunday Oct 14th with a 3.00pm kick off.
