Weston-super-Mare AFC - Match Reports
Match reports - Season 2007 - 2008
St.Albans City 0 v 3 Weston-super-Mare AFC
27/10/2007 -Blue Square South - 3:00pm
Cloudy
Weston bounced back to winning ways on Saturday putting behind them the two previous disastrous results to heap further misery on a side that has yet to record a home win this season, and now find themselves second from bottom in the Blue Square South.
Manager Tony Ricketts, back at the helm, introduced new signing Charlie Comyn-Platt, signed on Thursday, into the heart of the defence and whilst it is probably too early to assess his true worth, he certainly brought a much needed steel to the back line. In doing so he also brought out the best in fellow defender Craig Rand which helped to restrict the hosts to only one major chance throughout the game.
The first half was a dour affair with neither side creating any clear cut chances, most efforts came from long range and neither keeper was called upon to make any major contributions. Weston keeper Ryan Northmore did fling himself to his right during the half to save a shot from defender Damian Batt but, but probably made the save look better than it needed to be, whilst Rand did manage to fling himself in front of a shot from Danny Morgan to deflect the ball over for a corner.
As for the home keeper Nick Eyre he was virtually unemployed for the first 45 minutes, both defences coping with any threats without too much effort.
The second half was a different affair totally, whatever was said during the half time break certainly worked in Weston's favour. Within a minute of the restart the Seagulls had opened the scoring. Ashan Holgate had managed to slip his marker and he fed the ball out to Ryan Harley, he made ground before cutting inside and firing a shot which appeared to take the slightest deflection and sail beyond the reach of Eyre.
Three minutes later and the lead was doubled when Holgate and Gareth Hopkins combined this time to set up Harley, once again he cut inside and this time hit a riding shot beyond Eyre and into the top corner.
Hopkins then tested Eyre with a stinging left foot drive which the keeper did well to parry, harley then missed a chance to complete his hat trick by hitting a free kick just over, before Barry McConnell set up Holgate but Eyre, at full stretch, managed to turn the ball around the post.
Weston's third goal arrived in comical fashion and just about summed up the hosts season so far. A hopeful cross from the left by Holgate appeared to present no danger at all, the ball was presented to James Nash to clear, unfortunately his clearance hit Hopkins on the ankle and shot straight back passed the bemused Nash and keeper Eyre, and straight into the net.
Weston should have increased their lead on two occasions towards the end of the game, firstly Harley was denied when he cut inside yet again, fizzing in a shot which beat Eyre but struck the post and rebounded to safety, and then just before the final whistle substitute Dean Grubb went on a mazy run, beating three defenders but from point blank range shot straight at Eyre and again the ball was cleared.
This win lifts Weston back up to eighth position in the table, a position they will look to consolidate when Cambridge City come calling to the Woodspring Stadium on Saturday. Kick off is at 3.00pm.
