Weston-super-Mare AFC - Match Reports

Match reports - Season 2007 - 2008

Bath City 1 - 0 Weston-s-Mare

27/08/2007 -League Game - 3:00pm

Sunny

This Bank Holiday derby match did not live up to pre-match expectations and fizzled out into a dour game that was settled by the only goal scored just before the break.

Weston were forced to make one change from the side that triumphed against Sutton on Saturday, losing Craig Rand to the injury he picked up during that win, Andrew Robertson switching to the central defence and skipper Craig Loxton recalled into midfield. The hosts went for Weston straight from the off and missed a glorious chance to open the scoring in the second minute when Adie harris was allowed to wriggle through a couple of lack, lustre challenges and into the area, he flicked the ball to Darren Edwards who, from just a couple of yards out, toe poked the ball straight into the arms of a grateful Ryan Northmore.

On twenty minutes former Weston favourite Mark McKeever blasted Phil Walsh's long cross over the bar, and then came the first real Weston chance of the game but Marc McGregor fired wide after some neat build up work. Walsh then got on the end of a McKeever free kick but again the effort was off target.

On 40 minutes Bath scored what was to be the only goal of the game when they caught the Seagulls defence asleep. Billy Clark was adjudged to have brought down Scott Rogers (Ex-Weston) out on the left. The free kick was taken quickly whilst Weston were still lining up their wall and Rogers nipped in before anyone to steer the ball home.

Bath had a chance at the beginning of the second half when a misplaced back pass from Robertson resulted in a needless corner, from McKeevers place kick another ex-Seagull, Chris Holland headed wide.

Weston tried to play football during the second half but their normal slick play was being frustrated by a resolute Bath defence and the chances created were few and far between. Loxton screwed badly wide after being set up by Holgate and from a goal kick from Paul Evans, Aaron Wilson tried a speculative shot from 40 yards but the ball went straight back into Evans' arms.

Wilson then missed another chance when he fired wide after good work from Ben Willshire and McGregor.

The best move of the game almost saw Bath double their lead when Sekani Simpson, yet another former Seagull, exchange passes with Rogers who in turn fed Lewis Hogg, yes, you've guessed it, another ex Seagull, but his vicious shot was too close to Northmore.

As time ran out Weston pushed forward and pinned the hosts back in a frantic attempt to get back into the game but it was all in vain as the current league leaders held out to record their fourth victory in the opening five games.
