Clevedon Town 2 v 0 Weston-Super-Mare

04/08/2007 -Friendly - 3:00pm

Sunny

In their penultimate pre-season friendly Weston were well beaten by their near neighbours from the British Gas Business Southern League Premier Division. Admittedly the Seagulls were without skipper Craig Loxton, influential defender Craig Rand and also Matt Hale, nevertheless the hosts were well worth their victory. Showing more commitment and passion on the day Clevedon could well have scored more, and whilst Weston showed some very neat touches and some slick passing, their lack of sharpness in front of goal was there for all to see.

With Manager Tony Ricketts still away it was left to Assistant Chris Smith to stand in and he chose to start the game with frontman Gareth Hopkins and wide man Barry McConnell on the bench. The hosts started the better and keeper Ryan Northmore was called into action to deal with an inswinging free kick inside the first five minutes and the hosts should have done better moments later when a long kick upfield found the dangerous Steve Cook, he slipped past triallist Mike Taylor in the Weston defence but dragged his shot just wide of the far post. Dean Grubb then came to Weston's rescue when he cleared the ball from the feet of Christian Sylvestra, just as the midfielder was about to shoot.

Weston's first real chance came when home keeper Danny Greaves fumbled a long cross but the defence was on hand to clear the danger. Weston should then have opened the scoring when Lewis Powell combined with Lee Smith to set up another triallist, Ashan Holgate, but he stubbed his effort and Greaves collected the ball without too much effort.

The first goal came on 27 minutes when a surprise shot from Josh Brigham completely deceived Northmore, who presumably assumed the ball was going wide, instead the ball crept inside the near post.

The lead was doubled on 34 minutes when Cook picked up the ball wide on the right and drilled a cross shot past Northmore and into the far corner of the net.

The second half began with McConnell, Hopkins and Aaron Wilson on for Weston and whilst they showed again some neat footwork their finishing let them down. McGregor shot over from 30 yards, the midfielder then sent Grubb away down the right but his low cross was only partially touched by Hopkins and the ball was cleared. McGregor then saw a powerful header from a free kick palmed away by Greaves and from the resulting corner Billy Clark headed just over. The last chance of the game fell to Hopkins but his powerful shot was deflected away from danger.

With just one more friendly game to come Weston have little time to formulate their line-up for the season's opener against Thurrock on Saturday. After their reprieve from relegation last season it's vital that the team start off the season on a positive note. The manager has always indicated that he would like to bring in one or two more players, that time is almost upon us.
