Weston super Mare 0 Bristol City 2
GROUND RECORD AT THE WOODSPRING AS THE SEAGULLS PUT UP STERLING SHOWING AGAINST THE CITY ALL STARS!

06/08/2007 -Friendly - 7:00pm

Sun & Clouds

A terrific Woodspring Stadium crowd, of 1,361 (a new ground record for the Woodspring Stadium) basked in the early evening sunshine to watch Westons (and also Bristol Citys) final pre-season match, prior to the start of the new 2007-08 season, as City manager Gary Johnson kept his promise and brought along a star-studded line up.

Although missing their enigmatic 1M plus new signing Lee Trundle; City didnt disappoint with their line up for the night and included big-money buy, Northern Ireland international Ivan Sproule, Republic of Ireland international Richard Keogh and former Reading star and Scotland B international Scott Murray.

Following an excellent pre-match display by the Weston Cheerleaders (The Weston Shooting Stars) themselves obviously back to their top form following winning top awards at the recent national championships, held in Telford the game got off to a blockbusting start, when Sproule, playing in a central-striker position, showed exactly why his manager paid a huge six figure fee for him, was quick to snap up a golden opportunity with a crisp right foot drive past the despairing dive of keeper Ryan Northmore on seven minutes.

The expected City onslaught thereafter, from the expectant Robins fans amassed in the North stand looking resplendent in the summer evenings sunshine didnt materialise though, as the Seagulls eager to appease manager Tony Ricketts and indeed their own fans (who were in full voice on the evening) put up a high quality display against their Coca-Cola Championship side cousins.

Weston, led superbly on the evening by stand-in skipper Craig Rand worked terrifically hard and defended stoutly against last seasons League 1 runners up, and on 20 minutes, had fortune favoured the home team, all manner of shocks could have occurred; new-signing Aaron Wilsons shot worrying the City keeper; the former Gloucester City starlets shot from range, thwarted by the City keeper.

Shortly before half-time though as the Championship side began to flex their muscles, Scottish international Scott Murray went agonisingly close; following a fine cross field ball from Kevin Betsy; who was to go on to have such a fine match, he was voted man-of-the-match the by match-night sponsors.

Not to be overawed with making the match-night an occasion, Westons club officials introduced, Burnham-based recording artist, Jamie Lee at half time, who treated the crowd to an excellent rendition of Robbie Williams Angels.

The second half, continued much as the first had ended; both teams making substitutions, and both clubs continuing to serve up an entertaining nights football as indeed had been widely predicted by Weston FCs website www.westonsupermareafc.co.uk. City, as of course was befitting for their league standing, had opportunities to add to their scoreline, but again it was down to the safe handling of surely one of the Blue Square Souths top keepers Ryan Northmore, who as has proved so often in the past, frustrated Citys expensive forward line time and again; none more so than in the 72nd minute, when he denied Murray with a terrific one handed save.

It was Murray though who had the final say though, when his 82nd minute deflection from Phil Jevons free kick, flat-footed Northmore, to ease the City-slickers into a 2-0 win.

The club wish particularly wish to thank their match-night sponsors, Bristol City Supporters Club (Weston Branch) and match-ball sponsors, Avenue Dry Cleaners and Laundrette, and also Mr Mark Wederell for his excellent hosting of the evening.
